Where are WhatsApp messages stored?

What happens during import

The app reads the WhatsApp export ZIP, turns the text file and included attachments into a readable chat, and builds local indexes so you can search the archive.

1. Messages

   Message text, dates, participants, and chat order come from the export file.

2. Media and files

   Photos, videos, documents, audio, and other attachments are shown when WhatsApp included them in the ZIP.

3. Voice messages

   Voice-message transcription runs on your iPhone when the audio and device support it.

4. PDF preview

   The PDF is generated from the imported archive on your iPhone before you decide whether to save, share, or print.

What about saving in iCloud?

Chat Archive itself does not upload your imported chats to iCloud. Apple backup and transfer features may still preserve Chat Archive app data when your device is configured to include it.

1. iCloud Backup

   If you use iCloud Backup and Chat Archive app data is included in the backup, imported archives can be backed up with the rest of your iPhone data.

2. Moving to a new iPhone

   When you restore from an iCloud backup or transfer data from an old iPhone to a new one, Chat Archive data may be preserved with your other app data.

3. iCloud Drive is separate

   If you save the original ZIP or an exported PDF to iCloud Drive, that saved file is handled by iCloud Drive, not by Chat Archive cloud sync.

4. Manage it in Settings

   Use iPhone backup and iCloud settings to decide what app data and files are included in your Apple backups.

No live WhatsApp access

Chat Archive does not connect to your WhatsApp account or sync live messages. It only opens WhatsApp export ZIP files you manually import.

Good practice

Keep the source ZIP somewhere you trust. Review the archive before saving or sharing a PDF. Delete temporary transfer copies you no longer need.
