A long-running WhatsApp conversation can quietly grow to several gigabytes. Years of photos, videos, voice messages, documents, and everyday exchanges accumulate until one family group or important conversation occupies a noticeable part of your phone.
The obvious solution is to delete the media. But in the conversations that matter most, the media is often not clutter.
The photos may show children growing up. Voice messages preserve the sound of someone's voice. Videos capture birthdays, holidays, and ordinary moments that later become important. Documents and shared files may also form part of the history.
You should not have to choose between preserving that conversation and recovering space on your phone.
Preserve first. Verify second. Delete last.
Two different jobs
A WhatsApp backup is not the same as an archive
A WhatsApp backup is designed to restore WhatsApp after changing phones or reinstalling the app. It is not a browsable library of individual conversations.
You cannot normally place one large family group in a backup, remove it from your phone, and later download only that conversation when you want to read it.
An exported chat creates a separate copy of one conversation that you can store independently and open outside WhatsApp. It cannot be restored into WhatsApp as a live conversation.

Start with WhatsApp
Find what is using the space
Open WhatsApp and go to Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage. WhatsApp shows the conversations and files using the most storage.
Text messages usually occupy relatively little space. Photos, videos, voice messages, audio files, documents, animated images, and stickers account for most of it. A few long videos may use more space than years of written messages.
Review the largest conversations
Look at the chats and groups using the most space before you delete individual files.
Look for the heaviest media
Long videos, repeated images, documents, audio, and media from busy groups are useful places to start.
Decide what the media means
Ask whether each file is disposable clutter or part of a conversation you want to preserve.
Some WhatsApp versions also show Manage Storage inside a conversation. The name and location of these controls may vary by version.
Not every file means the same thing
Some media is clutter. Some media is the conversation.
The messages provide the story, but photos, videos, voice messages, and documents often carry much of its meaning. Saving those files separately may preserve them while losing the conversation around them.
Some media is clutter
Forwarded videos, repeated images, old flyers, memes, temporary documents, and files already saved elsewhere may be safe to remove individually.
Some media carries the memory
A photograph makes more sense beside the message that introduced it. A voice message belongs within the exchange around it. A birthday video gains meaning from who sent it and what everyone said afterward.
Keep the written chat when that is enough
WhatsApp may let you remove selected media while keeping the messages. This works well when the history matters but most attachments do not.
Keep a readable archive when the whole chat matters
Export the conversation with media so its messages, dates, participants, and included files can remain together outside WhatsApp.

Export the conversation with media
Open the conversation in WhatsApp. From the chat info screen or menu, choose Export Chat, then choose the option to include media.
WhatsApp creates a ZIP file containing the text history and the media it adds to the export. Save it in iCloud Drive, on a Mac or PC, on an external drive, or in another location you control.
WhatsApp exports one conversation at a time, so repeat the process for each important chat you want to preserve.
Keep the media in context
Export with media when the included photos, videos, documents, audio, and voice messages form part of the history you want to keep.
Keep the original ZIP
Do not treat an imported archive as your only source copy. Keep the ZIP somewhere you control, and keep another copy for conversations that truly matter.
An exported ZIP is an external archive, not a WhatsApp backup. It cannot be restored into WhatsApp as a live conversation.
Cloud storage without a permanent download
Keep the source ZIP in iCloud Drive
iCloud Drive can keep the archive available without permanently occupying the same amount of local iPhone storage.

Save the ZIP to iCloud Drive
Choose a folder you control in the Files app and wait for the upload to finish.

Open and verify it
Import the ZIP into Chat Archive and check the conversation while the WhatsApp copy still exists.

Remove the local download
Return to Files, touch and hold the ZIP, then choose Remove Download. The file stays in iCloud Drive while its downloaded copy leaves the iPhone.

Do not choose Delete
Delete removes the ZIP from iCloud Drive and other devices signed in to the same Apple Account.

Download it again when needed
Tap the ZIP in Files and import it into Chat Archive whenever you want to revisit the conversation.

Remove the imported copy when finished
An imported conversation uses device storage. Confirm the source ZIP is safe in iCloud Drive before removing the local archive from Chat Archive.

A ZIP is not proof
Check the parts you would be most afraid to lose
An export can exist and still be incomplete. Open it as a conversation and sample meaningful reference points instead of trying to inspect every message manually.
Beginning and end
Check the first and last dates and confirm the conversation covers the period you expect.
Memorable moments
Find an old period, a recent exchange, a birthday, or another event you remember.
Known messages
Search for words and phrases that you know appear in the conversation.
Important photos and videos
Open representative media instead of relying only on thumbnails or filenames.
Documents and other files
Check anything that would be difficult to replace or that you may need again.
Voice messages
Play recordings you would be afraid to lose. A transcription does not replace the original audio.
The source ZIP
Confirm that you know where it is stored and that you can download and open it again.
If something important is missing, stop.
Do not clear the WhatsApp copy. Try exporting again, or save the missing files separately before proceeding.
See the conversation, not a folder of files
Open the exported conversation in Chat Archive
Chat Archive does not clear WhatsApp storage. Exporting and importing create copies; they do not remove anything from WhatsApp.
The exported ZIP cannot be restored into WhatsApp as a live conversation.
Open the ZIP on iPhone to read messages in chronological order, jump through years by date, search for remembered phrases, review included media and documents, play and transcribe supported voice messages, and preview a PDF.
Use those tools to confirm that the archive still contains the moments you wanted to preserve and remains usable as a conversation rather than a collection of disconnected files.
Imported content is processed locally on your device. Chat Archive does not connect to your WhatsApp account or access live conversations.
Chat Archive can show only the messages and files represented by the ZIP. Files and previews depend on what WhatsApp included and what the iPhone can open.
Delete last
Clear the WhatsApp copy only after verification
Once you have checked the dates and confirmed that the important media is present, return to Manage Storage in WhatsApp.
Delete selected large files
Start with disposable media you no longer need.
Remove media but keep messages
When WhatsApp offers the option, clear media while keeping the written conversation available in WhatsApp.
Clear the whole conversation only when ready
Choose this only when you are comfortable keeping the conversation solely as an external archive.
Keep the source ZIP
The deletion happens in WhatsApp. The ZIP remains the source archive you can download and import later.
Chat Archive never deletes chats, media, or storage from WhatsApp. You remain in control of every deletion inside WhatsApp.
When storage is already critical
Make room without clearing the conversation you want to protect
Exporting a conversation with media requires temporary free space. When the phone is nearly full, WhatsApp may be unable to create the ZIP.
Before removing anything, confirm that it is safely stored elsewhere or can be downloaded again.
Remove downloads you can recover
Remove downloaded films or music, or move large photos and videos to another device.
Offload an unused app
On iPhone, Offload App removes the app while keeping its documents and data. Delete App removes both.
Make a text-first export
Export without media to preserve the written history while you create enough room for another export with media.
Save critical attachments separately
Preserve especially important files before removing anything from WhatsApp.
